God gave the song

As teenagers, my brother played his guitar and we sang God Gave the Song by Bill and Gloria Gaither  in church.  The words are as encouraging today as it was then and they remain true for me.

God gave the song
by  Bill and Gloria Gaither

You ask me why my heart keeps singing
Why I can sing when things go wrong.
But since I’ve found the source of music
I just can’t help it. God gave the song.

Come walk with me thru fields and forests.
We’ll climb the hills and still hear that song.
For even hills resound with music.
They just can’t help it. God gave the song.

What’s that I hear – I still hear that music
Day after day. that song goes on.
For once you know the source of music
You’ll always hear it. God gave the song.

Come on and join – It’s the song of Jesus
Day after day that song goes on
For once you know the source of music
You’ll always hear it. God gave the song.
For since I’ve found the source of music
I just can’t help it. God gave the song.

Maybe, 2010 brought an avalanche of trouble, disappointment and heartbreak, that hammered you into despair and hopelessness, leaving you tired, weak and petrified of what 2011 may hold.  Maybe as 2010 draws to a close, you are wishing that the gate to 2011 will remain closed, locked because surely, the new year will be more of the same problems or worse. Maybe you are that beaten down, that broken, that hopeless. Burying your head in the sand, hiding behind your fears, digging in your heels, wishing it away – won’t change the fact that it is almost here.

Despite the mental and emotional weariness, despite the darkness, despite the pull to curl up and give up, the song of love, compassion, help and hope rings true for you. God gave the song.

When the countdown begins, lift your head, take a breath, square your shoulders, step through the gate to 2011 singing. God gave the song.

He will walk with you, sustain you, enable you and strengthen you to wade through whatever unfolds.

You have the words, sing along with the music by Anthony Burger.
